mathias merkel hess, a writer turned artist turned explorer of all things creative and mad(aren’t we all). this guy and i have had many late night talks and rambling tangents that made the whole world seem a chaotic machine, and an artists plaything. he will be moving on to UC Long Beach as an adjunct professor this fall, i wish him well. he will also be a father soon, holy crap! he is an americana gem; a talented thinker, maker, and destroyer(in the best sense).

i got to collaborate with this guy in a number of ventures this year, including co-teaching “collabos”, an ass-kicking noise-making balls deep collaborative music class that was in short amazing. ill have pix of the show we played with our students later, but now some of the best illustrations and low-relief work you will ever see, courtesy of the rain maker…
Max’s work ethic is impressive to say the least, he is an ever-present body in the studio.

MEXICO SUMMER 2010 UPDATE

THE TOOL COLLECTION IS GROWING
JULY 24th will begin my work with the CASA BICITEKA, of Centro Historico, D.F., Mexico City. I will be with these kids for a month, building bicycles, making art, and having fun! My L.A. homie Rafa Esparza will be meeting me down there, as I will have been there since june 18th working with an archaeology project.
CASA BICITEKA www.bicitekas.org is a brand new bicycle co-operative and community bike workshop opening in June. The CASA is a non profit organization that helps teach riders how to maintain and fix there bicycles, while building bikes for those less fortunate ones! They have a new program/residency for artists and social workers who wish to go down and help. If anyone is interested shoot me an email and ill get you the info asap.
We will be helping them open shop, and assist them in building a tool and bicycle collection as it becomes available to us. We are currently searching any bike lovers, organizations, bike shops, anyone who wants to help. WE NEED TOOLS. Rafa and I will be collecting tools here in LA, I have written a proposal to a grant organization in order to help pay for the shipping. We have friends collecting tools in Los Angeles, Kansas City and Tulsa OK! Any tools that you do not need and think might help probably will. Casa Bicitekas Project Plan
7/25/10-8/24/10

On June 18th I will be leaving for Mexico City for an Ethno-History Studies Program in conjunction with the UCLA Archaeology Department. This course is a five-week, twelve credit program directed towards the study of ancient cultures in Southern Mexico. After the class, on July 25th I will be joining the newly founded Casa Biciteka, a bicycle education program located in the historical district of downtown D.F., Mexico City. The Casa Biciteka is a project spawned by associates of the renowned Centro del Pueblo, a social arts education program created to educate inner-city youth.

This June I complete my first year in the three-year, MFA Program at UCLA. My study both involves and draws influence from the indigenous cultures of Mexico, the study of addictive behaviors in humanity, and the commuter based efforts of mass-population. Throughout the past ten years I have been involved with various community based art and bicycle commuter workshops in Kansas City, San Diego, San Francisco, and now Los Angeles. It is my intention to take the knowledge that I have gained through these various projects, and apply it to the new endeavor in Mexico City. I remain in contact with these organizations, and am currently collecting donations of bike specific tools for the new shop in Mexico. We will continue to collect tools up until July 20th, when they will subsequently be shipped to Casa Biciteka, and commence the program.

My daily activities will involve assisting Casa Bicitekas in getting their shop or “taller” in order. I will be regularly holding workshops discussing bicycle safety, maintenance, building, recycling, and public awareness towards commuting in the city. My research will involve taking surveys of the proximal cycling population in the downtown area. This information will be utilized by the workshop to provide the assistance their patrons require. Projects involving artistic creation will be designed towards informing the public of the advantages found in commuting by bicycle, and the need for a safe coexistence between cyclists and automotive traffic.

The Casa Biciteka will provide me with living quarters above the workshop for the duration of my engagement. I will be the first artist/assistant to stay in this new space designed for artists in residence. Fellow artists will continue to participate in the program as it evolves. Part of my involvement is to bridge the gap between American artists and the Casa Bicitekas Residency program. In the future I will become a California based liaison. My responsibilities will include maintaining a functioning cultural relationship between the workshop in Mexico City, and the corresponding communities in California.

The goal of this project is to provide a community of self-aware cyclists, who can continue to promote the positive effects of bicycle transportation. In one of the world’s most populated cities, any growth in bicycle commuting would reduce problems with pollution and traffic.
