update!

here is my reply, with Justinian’s reply as well. As i said before, this has been a “grand experience”…

Hello Sir,
I understand your problems with the mirror, i can honestly say that i do appreciate being invited to the party and will attend with my partner. As for the piece, my ideas and thoughts behind what i wanted to achieve were made clear in my communication with Christina. The point behind the work was for the viewer to have an introspective insight into their own role as humans within this world of borders and boundaries. I must say this is the last place i thought my work would be censored in any way. Nevertheless I feel much better about the piece being removed than I do about it being shown with the reflective surface covered by the protective film. As a Director, I am sure you have dealt with many instances whence artists have been asked to make changes. These requests never seem to go well in that it proves detrimental to the artists intended agenda. The issues behind this particular work seem contrary to any political bias that would keep this work from being shown. Rather, the need for a more “camera and light” friendly work seem to be arbitrary blows to my own beliefs as an artist. My only hope is that you would consider showing the mirror work at another time, when the public can look at it for it’s intended meaning, and not be dissuaded by a fancy party and flashy lighting.

I look forward to seeing the work in it’s full completion, and am glad to have had this experience. I am sure that some good will come from it, as did The Wall, and it’s final destruction. Again I appreciate the tickets and expect a grand party worthy of such a landmark date,

Timo Fahler

Dear Timo,

Absolutely understood. I did not want to say that we removed it for a nice photo opportunity, but rather that the wall’s own art is a special lighting sequence that was built-in to the original design. And this is the first and most important commitment that was made at the outset of the project. I simply failed to realize the impact. I love the idea of the mirror and hope that you do not feel in any way that you were censored. I did not want to change the piece just because the creator of the wall installation had something else in mind. Rather, I would like to instead find another opportunity to display and exhibit your work.

Best,

Justin

Dear Timo,

We’re really glad that you could join our project and could participate in that weekend installation at the Page Museum. As has been the case with this project all along, there have been surprises. I unfortunately just learned that cameras and lights don’t react well to mirrors.

I am very sorry to say that after much deliberation and struggling with the event coordinators and producers that there was no other choice but to remove your mirror installation from the Wall Across Wilshire. As was explained to me, any reflective surface would make it impossible to have the lighting program that we had planned for the Wall. I understand that this must be a disappointment to you. I regret that this happened.

I would like to extend to you two tickets to the VIP party that will be proceeding the Wall Across Wilshire event. I have attached the invitation. The ticket price together is $500, but this will be provided to you free of charge. Please let us know if you will be joining us for the party. And once again, I’m very sorry.

Best,

Justin

photos from the wall project

last weekend i installed for the Wende Museum’s Wall Project at the LACMA/La Brae Tar Pits, a project that  marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. more murals will be painted this weekend, and the final installation of the wall across wilshire will happen on NOV. 8th, more info can be found at http://www.wallproject.org/

this weekend…

I know i haven’t been posting lately. a number of cloudy issues involving the “whys” of my daily practice have kept me from paying any attention to this artblog. anyhow, i have moved beyond my existential woes and into a care-free mode of gestural freedom. this has lead to an all out active process of full consumption{eat your words}, after all, freedom comes with a price…

even as i write this i am torn between the silent me that wishes to keep this post private, and the loud me that will push publish and get this post logged.

back to my point, join me saturday evening at the craft in america show, or you can come and visit me at Page Park, saturday afternoon as i install a new work for the upcoming berlin wall commemorative. some 40 artists will participate in the mock-up wall that will be installed across wilshire blvd. on november 8th, from 11pm to midnight and will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. more info at this link, http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2009/10/berlin-wall-segments-arrive-in-los-angeles.html

its official, timo sucio is out of retirement and back on the stage with drummer, el max rain, fellow problem solver and maker. last thursday was a first of many shows, and the second (of many) practices. the crowd was left in gaping awe and tepid sickness as the two music makers dreamed dreams. 2009-08-20 00.16.45

installation video

this video was projected concurrently within my installation at the Kansas City Art Institute Senior show. It is a documentation of the rooms transformation, comprising over 150 hours of time and compacting it into a two minute video loop. The stop motion film projects the process of evolution within the room, displaying the metamorphosis of the immediate area, and the manifestation that makes it all possible. during the show it was projected onto a wall within the room, contrasting the complex activity with the stagnant, and further defining evolution within personal, social, and institutional realms. The F**k Button’s “sweet love for planet earth” played on repeat from the opening to the close of the show. Link below to You tube vid…

passive activism

typical, no-one makes an absolute statement anymore, its no longer “PC”

so in a time whence manifesto’s and bold statements cannot be made {without a lawyer},

what?,

i ask,

are we to do……………….in order to change something\

i then felt obligated to confront my own inadequacies.
