installation video

this video was projected concurrently within my installation at the Kansas City Art Institute Senior show. It is a documentation of the rooms transformation, comprising over 150 hours of time and compacting it into a two minute video loop. The stop motion film projects the process of evolution within the room, displaying the metamorphosis of the immediate area, and the manifestation that makes it all possible. during the show it was projected onto a wall within the room, contrasting the complex activity with the stagnant, and further defining evolution within personal, social, and institutional realms. The F**k Button’s “sweet love for planet earth” played on repeat from the opening to the close of the show. Link below to You tube vid…

proper thanks for the extra hands; ryan, chi, keith, pawls, david, nathan, calder, julie, matt, amelia, and tom b.

the king is dead, again

the year was 1984(ish), my brother and i had not yet entered elementary school, so we spent our days playing hide-n-seek, swimming in pools, and break-dancing. MTV was strictly a music video channel, seems they are quite the opposite these days, whatever that is… anyway, back to my point, “thriller”, and “beat it” were all over the tv and radio back then, as was the hit single, “somebody’s watchin me” by some dude named rockwell and Michael, the king,, of pop,,, music,,,, duh. those were the days; moonwalks, backspins, parachute pants, a glove on one hand{was it the right or left?} and rat tails!(r.i.p. gregg “mr. wonderful” hernandez”) anyway, my brother, my cousins, and yours truly took our turns doin the electric bugaloo on the living room floor, products of the eighties, children of pop. Michael was truly the king, (madonna queen, and cindy lauper the estranged princess,,, again thats besides the point,) point is, the king is dead, will there ever be another? Most of us grew up and forgot about our king, we watched him grow old, his music went south(though “bad” was a pretty good album) and so did his rep. So the man liked to play with monkey’s, Mcualey Culkin and young children, the fact is we turned the king of pop into a weird sideshow, granted, he may have had a little bit to do with that himself. Now we all mourn the king, two years ago he was a pedophile, and a disgrace, this, “king of pop”. today he is a pioneer, a bronze figure, a KING. i forgot about michael as we all did, god his music was amazing though, anyway, all tears aside, here’s to Michael, the KING OF POP!!!!

kelly mclane @ angles gallery

i almost forgot to put these photos up, you would have missed an amazing show. kelly mclane is a friend of a friend of a KCAI alumnus’ wife, or something. it’s a short story, the shorter version, someone told me about the show and i went. mclane matches illustration with an abstract realism to create some sort of otherworldly imagery; highly imaginative and whimsical in an oddly playful manner. her sculptural work, humanamorphisis? elephantasmic? obese-centric?   i was more than impressed and that’s about all i can say, here are some photos for you, but you must see the show in person…

6-7-09 EL MAC, RETNA, KODAK, & KOFIE!

sunday @ the mid city arts gallery, RETNA and EL MAC had some sort of show/party… inside the gallery, pics 1 and 2, a giant mural/memorial piece, out back; a full on graff expo with one of my favorites, photo #3 KOFIE finishing up. also, KODAK, a writer with ties to tulsa kids, and EL MAC worked on a piece, slow and meticulous. KOFIE and KODAK have a show right now in echo park i have yet to see.

david lynch/danger mouse/sparklehorse opening

we decided openings in LA completely suck, especially for big names like david lynch. Lots of hoity toity types, everyone dressed to impress etc… they are social gatherings of the lamest kind. a close friend’s show, even a friend of a friends show, those could be worth the trouble, but the Lynch/mouse opening… better off catching it another time when the gallery isn’t full and you can actually try and get what Lynch was trying to do. There’s some great contreversy behind the project(artist vs. the man), and the show is worth seeing if the gallery is not packed full of socialites. anyway, i took some photos of the photos and here they are…

if your not in L.A., you can get the book, it was 50$ @ the gallery…also, more info on the “controversy

culver city galleries

culver city art walk, 30+ galleries, we made it to half. some highlights; the neon ____, Antonio Puelo’s intricate geometry, Caleb Weintraubs kids that rule the world, Christina Seely’s photography, and some random works that were not titled, nor tagged. also, i saw some Chloe Piene pieces up close! I admire her drawings for their simplistic contour style. she dabbles in many mediums and is pretty genius…

los angeles

first, at the LACMA outdoor sculpture park, Peter Voulkis’ Firestone, Urban Light by Chris Burden, some fake Mammoths at the “odoriferous” La Brae tar pits,  and Trace by Nancy Graves.

Inside the LACMA is the new Richard Serra exhibit, ginormous. Upstairs in the Broad Contemporary Gallery were works by Robert Rauschenburg, Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, Cy Twombly, Warhol, John Baldessari, and all of my favorite Jeff Koons pieces; the balloon dog, M.J. and Bubbles, and some amazing paintings he has also done (I had no idea how much of a stud he is). Unfortunately, no photos aloud in the building, But i downloaded some of Koons’ work to show ya!  The last of the series are by a woman named Lee Joong Keun, showing at the Culver City LA Modern Gallery. Fun Stuff (in the details)
